Pulled Punches

Dirty, down-on-the-farm funk. 1978 car wash country-folk. Subway transfer headphone space and a slow sun drop driving west. Pulled Punches is that lost A.M. radio transmission, coming through crystalline -- all shimmer and gleam. Ecstatic to be here, uncertain what comes next.

Red Horse at Legion, 10/17/2010

Red Horse was back again for an impromptu set at Legion, and it was swell. Grant and Adam, formerly of Young Lords, and JW and Steve from Your 33 Black Angels along with Zephaniah George entertained the intimate crowd at Legion once again, with a brand of country rock that kicks your ass more than it makes you feel swell. They even played a Your 33 Black Angels song. Thomas Bryan Eaton opened, and his guitar playing was on fire. Serena was there, along with a bassist and drummer I had never seen play with Thomas before. Hopefully Red Horse will post when their next show is before the day of, so I can let ya'll know.

Hoa Hoa's Record Release Party

On a sub-zero-degree night in the land of Blue Jays and Maple Leafs, my first visit to Toronto became a louder-than-life, droning, sonic explosion that I will never forget. Toronto's own The Hoa Hoa's, which by now must be all but owning their town's scene, released abrand new album, pop/drone/pedals, at The Silver Dollar Room on December 3rd. It was one of the most captivating shows I've seen in a long time, and one I will likely never forget.

The Hoa Hoa's are not just a bunch of swell 60's rock aficionados. They live it, breathe it, and play it...just with modern effects and play it with modernity in mind. Their instruments, amplification and style is all very vintage, however their ability to make it sound modern keeps it interesting and enthralling. And rockin.' The largest evidence of this is their ability to combine techno beats and repetitive dancey basslines with the old school rock and roll they love so much. Bassist Femke and drummer Calvin kept me unable to sit still, let alone standing on the floor. Suddenly after a rush of people made me change where my feet were on the floor, I found myself climbing up onto the bar so I can see and hear as clearly as possible. Some of those basslines are still ringing in my ears. The Hoa Hoa's are going to be in New York City at Don Pedro on New Year's Eve, and that's good. I can't wait.

Dinosaur Jr. in Connecticut

Tomorrow marks my second attempt at seeing Dinosaur Jr. live. A 90's cult punk-sonic icon, the Jr. was missed by me when they played with Sonic Youth a couple years back in Massachusetts as part of a charity concert. I decided not to go, instead rocking out at home along with my friend Betsy. This time, it's years later, but now this isn't the reunion tour anymore, so that's better because they'll be better. Maybe. Maybe they'll be tired of it. Maybe they won't like it. I was also excited to see that the Missingmen were playing, but then I looked it up and saw that it's Lou Barlow and the Missingmen, not Mike Watt's outfit.

9/9/09

All of this talk about the mystical number nine, how 9/9/09 was going to be some life-changing event, how it is a lucky day in China but unlucky in Korea, how if you turn it upside down it's 6/6/06, blah blah blah. Just another day in the life of one Lemmy Kilmister.

Motorhead played at Roseland Ballroom in NYC on 9/9/09. For some reason Livenation didn't post the actual time of the show so naturally we arrived AFTER Nashville Pussy and some other opening band...even the Reverend Horton Heat had started playing already by the time we got there, which sucks because what a lineup it would have been. I wanted to see half-naked white trash folks play brutal punk rock. Nashville Pussy has been around quite a while.

I think I've seen the Rev. about five times now, and they are always good. The sound engineer at Roseland didn't really know how to make this band sound good in this room, but that bass is probably really hard to make clear and not punch holes in everyone's eardrums, right? They were good. Hope they play forever.

Then Motorhead came on, the crowd was really excited. Betsy could smell the testosterone level skyrocket. I turned to my buddy and said "That looks like Matt Sorum." Then I forgot about it. Then later Lemmy introduced the band, and said, "Matt Sorum." Weird. He did pretty well. I really wish for my first time I was able to see Motorhead in all of its original brutality, but maybe next time. I guess the drummer is filming an Australian version of Survivor. Someone started running towards the front and punched Betsy in the boob. Lameass.

Here's the setlist I found on another site.

1. Iron Fist
2. Stay Clean
3. Be My Baby
4. Rock Out
5. Metropolis
6. Over The Top
7. One Night Stand
8. I Got Mine
9. Guitar Solo
10. The Thousand Names Of God
11. Another Perfect Day
12. In The Name Of Tragedy
13. Just 'Cos You Got The Power
14. Going To Brazil
15. Killed By Death
16. Bomber
Encore:
17. Whorehouse Blues
18. Ace Of Spades
19. Overkill

So for about an hour and a half I was in headbanging heaven, it was just as loud and high-energy as I had hoped, and expected, and I left there with a big smile on my face. It ruled. Can't wait to go back. 9/9/09 was just as crazy as they said it was going to be.

H&O

I'm obsessed with Hall and Oates. It's perfect music. Well, for what they were trying to do - being the soul brothers that they felt they were - they did it perfectly. I can't get enough of the Private Eyes LP Bootsy has, and I've been studying their dance moves in amazing videos like this for the past couple weeks. the obsession continues with my quest to become the dynamic duo's unofficial biographer.
